Marc André Fournel, flûte

Marc André Fournel was born in Montreal. He began his musical studies at the age of five with the violin and piano before choosing flute, which he went on to study at the Conservatory of Montreal. Then, with Jeanne Bastresser and Timothy Hutchins at McGill University he obtained his Bachelor of Music with distinction. He then moved to France where he studied with Maxence Larrieu at the National Superior Conservatory of Music in Lyon and obtained first prize in 1983 by a unanimous vote.

He was principal flautist of the Canadian Chamber Orchestra, the McGill University Chamber Orchestra, the Youth Orchestra of Quebec and also played regularly with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. He is prize winner of the Quebec Orchestra Competition. In 1985 he settled in Switzerland where he was appointed the position of principal flautist of the St. Gall Symphony Orchestra and Opera. He was often called upon as a replacement in the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Tonhalle Orchestra and the Opera of Zurich.

Alongside his orchestral career, he has performed as soloist (Mozart, JS Bach and CPE Bach, Karl Nielsen, Jacques Ibert Concertos). He has also given many concerts in the formation of chamber music in several European countries.

His discography includes 4 albums:

-1993: a double album of the entire collection of sonatas of Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach (at ETCETERA, Amsterdam, première mondiale);

-2004: La belle époque, French music for flute and piano with Claire Pasquier (Orpheus Recording);

-2009: Philippe Gaubert, 6 pieces and 3 sonatas for flute and piano with Claire Pasquier (Digital Planet);

-2013: Méditation, 20 meditative pieces for flute and organ with Claire Pasquier (Digital Planet).

He is also professor of flute. First at Concordia University of Montreal, then at the Conservatory of Givors in France from 1982 until 1985 and finally from 1998 to 2010 at the Canton School of Trogen in Switzerland. He gives masterclasses, notably at Falautcampus, Salerno in Italie.
